The Plot of The Incomer

Isla and Sandy, a brother-and-sister duo, have lived alone on a remote Scottish island for 30 years. Following their father’s wishes, the siblings have dedicated their lives to caring for the island and keeping it safe from “incomers.”

Their unusual existence consists of hunting seabirds, conversing with imaginary friends, and entertaining one another with stories passed down through their family. But when a lone stranger named Daniel arrives on the island, their carefully constructed world is turned upside down.

I absolutely adored this movie!

I walked into the theater without really knowing what to expect, and I walked out completely in love with this story and its characters. The Incomer has such a wonderfully quirky sense of humor, with plenty of lovable eccentricities and genuinely laugh-out-loud moments woven throughout.

I especially loved watching Isla and Sandy (played by Gayle Rankin and Grant O’Rourke) navigate the unexpected arrival of an “incomer.” Their sibling dynamic is fascinating, hilarious, and occasionally downright alarming. Then there’s Daniel (Domhnall Gleeson), whose awkward yet completely genuine interactions with the siblings add another delightful layer to the story.

But the heart of The Incomer goes beyond its wonderfully eccentric characters. There’s something incredibly warm and human underneath all of the humor. Watching these characters navigate change, connection, and one very unexpected disruption to their isolated lives makes the film surprisingly heartfelt.

And, of course, there’s the scenery. Filmed amid the breathtaking landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, The Incomer is absolutely gorgeous to look at. The sweeping scenery provides a stunning backdrop for this strange, funny, and unexpectedly touching story.
